New Delhi: Stone Mountain has become India’s most popular resort, with more than one million visitors visiting each year, according a survey by the tourism ministry.
The resort is located in the foothills of the Himalayas, a rugged terrain in eastern India, the ministry said on Monday.
The survey, which was carried out by Tourism Research Institute of India, a non-profit research institute, said Stone Mountain is one of the top 10 destinations in India for visitors.
The country’s tourism industry, which is growing, has seen a spike in visitors from the country’s mountainous terrain in recent years.
India has the second-highest number of foreign tourists to the country and tourism accounts for about 40 percent of the country, the study said.
It said Stone is the third-most popular destination in India.
“Tourism in India is very important and we need to continue to promote tourism in the country,” Tourism Minister Kapil Mishra said in a statement.
“We have to promote the country as a great place to go on vacation.
We are working to increase the number of international visitors by 50 percent, and this will benefit our tourism sector,” he added.
